Waver Sensei started his Aikido training at the University of Northern Illinois in 1975 under the direction of Akira Tohei Shihan Chief Instructor of the Midwest Aikido Federation. In 1985 Waver Sensei founded the Colorado Aikikai in Golden, CO under the guidance of Tohei Shihan. Upon moving back home to Grand Marais in 1992 he started the Grand Marais Aikikai. In July of 1999 Tohei Shihan passed away.
In the summer of 2002 he attended the 30th Anniversary Seminar at the University of Minnesota Aikido Club where Rev. Zenko Okimura Shihan was the guest instructor. After attending several seminars and getting to know Okimura Shihan, in 2004 Waver Sensei decided to join the World Aikido Aikikai Incorporated. Okimura Shihan shares the same Aiki Spirit and dedication to the Ueshiba Family as Tohei Shihan did.
Waver Sensei, Cheif Instructor of the Grand Marias Aikikai received his Sondan(3rd degree Black Belt) and Yondan(4th degree Black Belt) from Okimura Shihan and feels very fortunate to be a part of the WAAI Family. He looks forward to many more years of spirited training.
